When you start to write an essay the first thing you will need to do is a little research. Put down on paper what the word "family" means to you. Find out what "family" means to others.
Put your information into a list, no particular order just a list.
Now look at your list are there things that seem to go together?
Take a piece of paper and in the middle write the word "Family". Draw a circle around it. Write other words that might mean the same thing as family and circle them.
Now you need to make your outline. What are the three main things you want to say about Family?
You are now ready to start writing so go to it. I know you will hand in a great paper. :-)

First off, I'm sorry for your loss. That must be very hard to go through. However, it is not a good idea to use that because it will talk about your father's traits, not yours. A college essay needs to be about you, not your father. Go with a good life-changing moment or why you are choosing your major. Each college has their own requirements for a college essay. Some have a specific question to answer. Normally the minimum is 300 words and the maximum is 650 words (but once again, some colleges are different). So, anywhere from 1 - 2.5 pages (double-spaced, size 12 font). Good luck!

Just write down the facts as you see them. Let them speak for themselves.

I wouldn't take the approach "and this is why my family sucks" or "and this is why my family is great" but rather discuss the good times and the bad times and how that has helped form your character so far.
