So, I was running a Microsoft Update and a box came up that said that a file would not copy and I should either check the location or type in Windows Update Server something something. Well, I typed in what it said to type and it didn't work. I didn't have another location so I tried to cancel. When I clicked cancel it said my computer might not work if I cancel. Well, after a few hours I needed to shut off the computer so I just did. Of course, when I tried to turn it back on the computer wasn't working properly. The black screen that says Windows didn't shut down properly or something came up. You know, the one that asks if you want to start it in safe mode or last known good configuration or just start windows normally? Well, no matter which one I choose, the computer never finishes booting to get me to the screen where I enter my password to actually log on to windows. It just keeps going back to that black screen that says windows didn't start properly. So what do I do?

Sorry, couldn't fit it all. My brother suggests that I get another hard drive (internal) and install that as the master and make my current drive the slave. Then, I can get my files off of my current hard drive. So I'm on my way to buy a hard drive to do the job. All I want is my files, otherwise I would just put in the restore CD. What's the easiest/cheapest way to resolve this problem? It's a Dell I bougth in '02 or '03.

OK, now I'm online looking at different hard drives. Which one should I get?

We're 1,500 miles apart, otherwise I would use his computer.

Hi. If you just want to get your files then one the same size as you have would work. But drives are getting more capacity for less money. You may want your new (high quality, higher capacity) drive to be your main one.

Sounds as if your bruv knows what he's up to....why not install your hard drive in his pc as slave, get the files off, get the drive back to your PC (set as before) then use your restore disk.
Sweet talk wins battles.....
