Material is not the only important things in chess.. If you think that.. because you have a pawn advantage, or a Rook vs Knight advantage, it necessarily mean that you win.. you might be wrong.. especially if you play against someone much better than you.. High level player will happily sacrifice some piece to get some positionnal/strategic advantage.. the fact that you have one more rook than your opponent mean nothing if he has a single pawn that you can't stop on the 7th row.. Position and long term anticipation is the key in high level chess, much more than material advantage.. because it's not likely you'll get a material advantage vs a strong opponent, unless, of course, he thinks it's a good thing for him to give up a piece for some reason, which is usually get in a good position, while your position will be hard to play( i.e. : Your king left alone without pawn to protect him.. your bishop blocked, unable to move.. )

It is important to protect your king. It sounds like you are piling on for the attack, but neglecting your defenses. Also, if you are setting up a large attack, but notice that it is never quite ready, your opponent has probably stalled you and is attacking elsewhere on the board.

It appear that you have a very good opponent, you are better then him, but you relax when you think that you are going to win. Always remind yourself to be more careful and be sharp, you will win.

So what if you're checked? If doesn't matter that much unless you're in checkmate. Then you just lose. Yep. Try to focus on your and your opponent's pieces. And you can't focus on just one piece either.
