Censorship is the systematic use of group power to broadly control freedom of speech and expression, largely in regard to secretive matters. Sanitization (cleaning or decontamination) and whitewashing (from whitewash) are almost interchangeable terms that refer to particular acts or campaigns of censorship or omission which seek to "clean up" the portrayal of particular issues and facts which are already known, but which may conflict with a presented point of view.

Censorship -- the control of the information and ideas circulated within a society -- has been a hallmark of dictatorships throughout history. In the 20th Century, censorship was achieved through the examination of books, plays, films, television and radio programs, news reports, and other forms of communication for the purpose of altering or suppressing ideas found to be objectionable or offensive. The rationales for censorship have varied, with some censors targeting material deemed to be indecent or obscene; heretical or blasphemous; or seditious or treasonous. Thus, ideas have been suppressed under the guise of protecting three basic social institutions: the family, the church, and the state.

If you consider that Elvis Presley's gyrating hips were once banned on TV you will see that you are about to open a can of worms. Different countries ban different art forms, often directly relating to some religious tenet. The Taliban in Afghanistan banned all forms of music and dance. There's a happy country for you. I would suggest you limit your project research to whichever dance/era you're project covers and hit the internet!

Censorship is about suppressing information. It can involve not disclosing news stories or banning books. Not as popular in the West as it once was.

If you're doing a dance project, I wouldn't worry about censorship. Unless you're planning to dance in the nude, in which case don't be doing stuff in arts centres that cater to heavily fundamentalist Muslim/Christian populations. Those guys aren't interested in art. Or naked people, for that matter.

It used to stop mucky little boys getting their hands on mucky little films and magazines. Now it is used to stop all kinds of nasty things being seen by people who shouldn't see it.
These days not everything is able to be censored, which in some instances it is a good thing, but generally it is not so good. For example, The internet is not censored so therefore, everyone can see everthing! Is that good or bad?

In the interest of public decency, it would be advisable to withdraw the question. Should you not wish to comply, further measures may be taken.
