A short ramp and a long ramp both reach a height of 1 meter. Which ramp has a greater mechanical advantage?

my guess is the shorter one will give you more energy. anything rolls off of that will be faster and have more enertia.
the longer one would be easier to use a lift, so has the advantage mechanically.

Long, I think, because it's stretching out the work so that it's easier to lift the load up the 1 meter. The short ramp would be closer to just lifting it straight off the ground, so the mechanical work would be less on the long ramp, so the mechanical advantage of it would be greater.

Wrong ..the long ramp has the greater mechanical advantage.


For ramps the mechanical advantage is lenght divided by height.

the long ramp. because the degree of rise is smaller which makes it easier to move up on.

Think of it this way, If you were moving and had to put your washing machine in a truck using a ramp that was only 5 feet long that had to reach up 4 feet to the truck vs a ramp that was 25 feet long to the same hight. you would have to lift the washing machine to get it on the truck vs pulling it along the ramp with a 25 footer.
