xp
I have yet to see a laptop handle Vista very well. Laptops are simply not powerful enough to run Vista. Vista is also still very expensive.
Technical help for Vista is also very limited, I myself trained with xp and I am in no rush to qualify for Vista yet. xp technical help is good for the next five years or so.
Also if you want the laptop for exams you want to use a system that you are familiar with and can use quickly and fix any errors.
Also as most answers will explain Vista has a lot of errors at the moment. Many drivers are not yet compatible and many applications such as itunes can not yet be used on Vista.
All in all, save some money and time with Windows xp home or professional.

I agree with you, buy XP first.
Later you will have to upgrade to Vista, but I would put off doing that until all the bugs are worked out. Microsoft has a long history of shipping products before they have been completely debugged. They want their customers to do it for them, and they want to get new stuff to the market as quickly as possible. After Microsoft published Service Pack 2 for Vista then it would be safe to upgrade to it. I am going to wait that long.
You can try Windows Vista and most new laptops will have it preloaded. In that case then you should be alright, just expect a lot of odd problems to crop up when you do something difficult like go on line, install new hardware and some programs. If you only use Microsoft programs then you will be okay, but I use a lot of programs and I go on the Internet everyday. I had enough problems migrating from Windows 2000 to XP that I don't want to repeat that for at least another year.

you ought to consistently purchase the computing device w/Vista and then reformat/load XP and no longer have Vista. Or wait some months and look at domicile windows 7. Microsoft would be dropping help for XP in some unspecified time sooner or later. you are able to in all probability purchase a used reproduction of XP or borrow from pal.... I even have acquaintances that use Vista and are pleased with it. They use customarily for track and pictures... for my area I quite have in no way tried Vista so do no longer comprehend what the beefs are..have caught with XP.

Well since vista has soo much visuals it uses a lot of power to run. Ive read reviews people saying XP is better for now maybe later. But I guess if its a good laptop VISTA is good.
Just dont get Celeron or Semphron
Try to get dual core with 1 gb ram
you can get a pretty good one for 800 to 1000 the most

You should look for a deal that gives you XP with an option for a free Vista upgrade later.
Also, consider going with the Pro edition - it is much more stable.
