This is a question that plagues writers and would-be writers all the time. My first part of my response would be: what do you like to write? You have to stimulate your imagination or find a live subject that interests you. Then, decide if you want to write novels, or biographies, or anthologies. Anthologies are books with different short-stories based on a central subject of the book.

Once you figure that out, a little research into that interest is in order. And also, let your imagination be your guide, especially in the fiction area. Then, start writing. Plan about 30-minutes to an hour a day of writing, or roughly 5-10 pages a day; whatever works for you.

Take about 6-8 months to write your book; then put it away for 3-4 months to allow yourself time to get over it. Maybe write on something else during that time.

After that 3-4 month interval has passed, pull out your manuscript off of the computer, or the tablet you wrote it on; then check for spelling and/or sentence and punctuation errors. Once you make these notes, make your corrections and find a local critique group-in your neighborhood or online to get a second pair of eyes to give it a once-over.

Then, go through it again and polish those fine points, and while you do this, send out queries to agents. Use a book called the Writer's Market or go to http://www.writersmarket.com, and look up an agent who would be able to represent your type of writing.

And just follow that person's advice. They can assist you in getting published at that point. The normal time to do all of this is about 1-3 years, realistically.

Ok, your spelling and grammar are not great as per this posting. However, presuming that you would not present a book in this way to an agent...

1) You need an original story.
2) That story needs to be told in an least 65,000 words, preferably 100,000.
3) Once the book is complete (typed in double line spacing) you need an agent.
4) If and when you find an agent... well, after that it's plain sailing.

Never self publish, this is called 'vanity' publishing for a very good reason.

Never pay an agent or a publisher, your work should generate its own resources.

And don't let people put you down for trying. While there are many writers with degrees in English, there are also many published writers who left school with little educational qualifications, myself included.

Write your book and approach a reputable agent with it. If it is no good they will tell you. Spelling, punctuation and grammar... yes it is all important, but you can learn these skills by joining a creative writing class.

A passion for writing, and a passion for books is more important than spelling. If you work with Microsoft Word the programme will correct your spelling and suggest grammatical changes as you work.

Best of luck; and if you would like to read the first chapter of my 'uneducated' writing the website below will take you there. Under the tab marked 'news' is the first chapter of The Mun, and from that you will see that, although I left school at 13, with no formal qualifications, I am still a published author.

If you're visually oriented try for a screenplay. You can make more and usually, that's what readers do. Look for a good book to turn into a screenplay. This way you cut out the middleman. Before you do anything, do two things.
1.) Get well acquainted with the copyright office website.
2.) Write. Write. Write. Write. ( Hint. )
3.) Don't trust anybody.
4.) No you really don't need an agent.
5.) www.keepwriting.com

Just because other people do not believe in self publishing DOESN'T mean it isn't for you . It is every individual persons own decision, how they publish their book.

Well you write the book on your own... at the same time get in touch with publishers with a synopsis of what you're writing... if they're interested they'll get back to you... once you're done with your book and still dont have a publisher, methodically send your manuscript to every publisher you can find and find out if they're interested...
remember, jk rowlings' manuscript was rejected by a few publishers as they thought it was a bit far fetched...

The first thing is, you must have something to say. Do you have anything deep inside you that is crying to get released? Is there something that you feel really strongly about and need to express? Something that you desperately want to share with the human race, some philosophy, some epiphany that has taken hold of you and you now want to share this wonderful discovery with the world?

Ask yourself these questions, and in their answer shall lie the answer to your question.
