If you play peek-a-boo with a child who does not have ANY of this skill, the child will look away and not look back to find you.
The child who knows that you still exist behind the blanket or whatever, HAS it.

Heinz......you NUT!
Object permanence refers to a developemental stage in psychology. When little kids play "peek - a - boo" they get a big "charge" out of it, because they don't yet have object permanence. When you hide your face, they think you have disappeared completely... when you show your face again, they think you have suddenly rematerialized out of thin air, and they are AMAZED! A kid with "object permanence" knows that despite the fact that you can't be seen, you are, in reality, still "there".
