Appendix function remain controversial but it is said to have some role in immune system. Medical literature states that the appendix is not generally credited with significant function. However there are current evidence that implies its involvement in the immunologic mechanism. On the other hand, there are reported cases of congenital absence of appendix and so far there is no any report of any impairment of the immune or gastrointestinal function among them.

The human appendix has no known physiological function. It branches off of the cecum right before the colon begins. It is possible that earlier in the evolutionary history of humans the appendix was part of the digestive system and used to digest cellulose. This was most likely due to a highly herbacious diet.

The appendix in humans has no practical function.

In herbivorous animals it seems to contain bacteria for the digestion of cellulose.

See the wiki page on Vermiform (ie worm-shaped) appendix. If you meant another type of appendix, I included the wiki link for that too.
