I absolutely love this writer.

A loose paraphrase might be that being generous means giving even if you can't afford it, or you might go without something to see that someone has what they need. Pride means not accepting something even though you may very well need it.

Taken together, these two ideas mean that pride ruins generosity and can effect even the opportunity to be generous.

If you are too proud to accept a gift, then you shouldn't give them either. Denying the giver is selfish, just like pride.

It means that the only true giving is to give enough that it hurts. And taking less than you need, is when someone offers help you minimize the extent to which you need help because of pride....you don't want to be thought of as a loser. My father used to always turn me down when I wanted to give him something or do something for him. When he was dying, he told me how afraid he was. This was the only time he had told me how he felt. Taking from someone can be a form of giving.
