I make obscure references to the cat, or maybe just the bag, but keep it in the bag. I pinch it out some cat-nip here and there, but deny the bag even exists. The claims I make about the cat are elusive enough to distract from any cats at all.

Depends on the situation... "don't tell anyone but I'm going to leave my husband and run away with a guy I met on-line" or "don't tell my husband, but I've been chatting with some guy on-line".
In the first situation, If I could not stop the person, I would "let the cat out of the bag".
In the second situation I would just discuss the ramifications with the person. Every situation is unique and should be thought out carefully.

I am always trying to keep the cat in the bag and keep it firmly shut in.

Crumbs, twice in one night, just think of it! Well, as to our cat I think I'd like to keep it in the bag & chuck it in the drink. But my wife likes the little bugger, so there you go...

If you've been given it, then let it out. Whatever inside - it's yours now. If you are giving it to someone else - let them decide. You keep it shut.
