I don't pick things up in the first place. I go with a very small mental list of stuff I NEED and I only use the hand held basket, not the cart. I won't buy more than I can carry in one trip since I have to walk home with it. I stay away from frozen meals because they are way too expensive. I won't even look at the junk food isle unless I have a craving for one particular thing.

Before I go to the grocery store to buy food for the week the family sits down and discusses what we will eat each day. I write down everything I need for those meals and I go by that list when I get to the store. I have two children at home and each are allowed two different nutritious snacks for the week as well. I post a menu of the weeks meals on the fridge so that we know what to fix each day (that way the children don't argue on what they want that particular night.) saves time, cuts down on food waste and not to mention the money you save.

Before I go shopping I make a menu for 4 - 5 days ahead & then prepare shopping list accordingly.
- I buy fresh
- I do not buy anything in a shiny packages
- I do not go grocery shopping when hungry
- I do not buy products with preservatives
- I do not buy soft drinks & sweets
I think healthy & staying thin

Make a list, don't go hungry, set a spending limit then take that much with you into the store, concentate on food items only, any non food items can be spread out between pay periods.

I buy what I need not what I want first. Then I allow myself $20.00 worth of junk and not a cent over. Candy is not groceries. Also, if I have a certain amount of cash I look for the deals so I can have money left over for junk. But, most Importantly make a legitimate list.

Some great suggestions already can't add much. Just don't shop hungry. Set a budget and make a list. Plan meals. Give yourself a little extra for junk/snacks.

I make a list of what I NEED.
And never go shopping on an empty stomach, you get tempted.
I grab what I came for and that's it.
So,I never overspend.
Sky.
At the end of the month still have money left
most have at the end of their money a lot of month left
See the difference.
Don't buy junk food at all.

Skip the aisles with "junk food" in them. Also, go to the store with a pre-made list, and only allow yourselves 2 or 3 extra items. When you are done getting the necessary items, allow yourself to splurge on junk food if you have room/money.

Get a bit of each group. Say you buy a green pepper, a potato and an onion, Go without the green pepper. Or in the case of your junk food, if you have a box of popcorn, a bag of candy and 2 bags of chips, ditch the bag of candy and a bag of chips. So you still get everything you want, just not so much of it.

Make a list, stick to the list.
Don't shop while hungry or with small children.
Take just enough money to buy what's on the list, you can;t overspend if you don't have the money to do it.
