Recently i have been working and saving up my money to donate it to a non profit horse rescue center... however i am not sure whether or not i should donate it to a smaller organization or a big one... Part of me says smaller, because big ones probably get a lot of publicity and donations-- whereas the smaller ones, in the same situations, don't.

--Here are the two websites i have been looking at. Check them out and tell me what you think?

BIG: http://www.habitatforhorses.org/
VS.
LITTLE: http://www.defhr.org/

I want my money to go to the place that needs it the most and be put to use best to help save and care for horses.

I live in michigan and there aren't a lot of places around here or nearby i could volunteer at... so volunteering to see the facilities is unfortunatly not an option, as much as i would really love to.

Ateet K- Horses are my life and it kills me to see them being abused just because they are animals, there are MANY people helping out starving childen and people, including the government-- the government doesn't help out with the animals hardly at all and it's up to us to help. You know what i say? Screw you, im putting my money to a GOOD cause rather than just spending it at the mall-- im 16 years old so don't expect me to be able to donate a ton ANYWHERE, i'll donate my money where ever i damn well please. At least im donating it, what have you donated to? Selfish ****

You should check with each rescue and see who sponsors them. Find a common sponsor and donate to that organization. Both shelters will get equal increments of your money along with other shelters that they may sponsor.
For instance- several rescues are sponsored by major feed or horse retail companies. If you go to different websites you will see a link that says Save Rescues Here or something to that effect. Simply click the link and see how to donate.
This way you know that what your money is going to go towards. It will go towards vet care, feed, and other horse supplies.

However, you do have habitatforhorses listed- this is not just a lone rescue. They have horse rescues set up all over the country- big ones and small ones. Your money may not go to help a horse in your community but another horse in a different city or state.

I'm not sure where in Michigan you are but Horses Haven is another wonderful in central Mich. You might be near enough to volunteer and you can check out their informative site. I think you're doing a wonderful thing, if every one could set aside a dollar or two a week and make a donation to any good cause once a year imagine the difference it could make. The people you can donate time are doing just as valuable of a thing. Thank you for caring.

Have you tried checking with a local vet? They probably could help you with some suggestions-- I'm sure they have their favorites.

I live in New Mexico and we have a LOT of equine resucues, but I'm not always sure how responsible they are with their finances. Instead, I donate to a place called Best Friends (in Utah). Go to their website at bestfriends.org and check them out. They are a no-kill shelter that does all kinds of veterinary work and rehab, and also keeps unwanted animals for the rest of their lives. It's a great place, and they rescue animals from all over the world. They have every kind of animal imaginable, including horses. Look into it-- their web site will make you cry!

This is a wonderful Idea...but to be sure you are giving to the right organization (many times folks rescue horses and they end up in situations just as bad or worse) volunteer at the rescue before giving money...see the rescued horses environs...check their feet, feed, housing etc...if that all checks out..give to the ones who have the horses best interests at heart.
bless your heart for what you are going to do!

Okay i totally agree with you that the little one gets less donations but the big one looks nicer and better so i would donate to the big one...but it would be nice to donate 1/2 and 1/2 your money!
Good Luck in what ever you do.

What a nice idea. I would give them a call and ask how much of your donation goes in admin costs and how much is used to actually help horses. Some charities are efficient and some are top-heavy in the administration end and use way too much of their donation dollar to upkeep themselves.
You want your money used well, so this is a fair question to ask.

Little or big, non profit organizations all need money. Find out what cause your most interested in and support it. Here are several horse rescue links in Michigan:

Even though one is larger, they both probably need the money badly.

what about if you split what you earn 60-40 between the 2 organizations, 60% going to the smaller one, 40% to the larger?

By the way, I think what you are doing is awesome!!!! (c:
