1859
The history is interesting. The area was long inhabited by native tribes, but after Lewis and Clark's expedition in the early 1800's, the area was slowly settled by fur trappers and traders who followed the Oregon Trail. Following the War of 1812, the area was in British control. The British Hudson's Bay Company had a large presence folowing British control, and many British citizens settled in the area.

In 1818 the US and Britain signed an agreement that both nations would share control between the 42nd and 54th parallels, but in 1846, President Polk signed the Oregon Treaty that gave the US sole control of the territory below the 49th parallel. By 1848, the area was known as the Oregon Territory. Congress helped increase settlement by giving land rights to all who settled in the Oregon Territory by December 1, 1850 with the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850. So many settlers began arriving in the Oregon Territory that statehood became inevitable. On February 14, 1859, Oregon was admitted to the Union, the 33rd state to do so, and the next-to-last state to be admitted before the Civil War (the last was Kansas, admitted on January 29, 1861).
