We didn't acquire Texas. It joined the union as the 28th states in 1845. You see, the area that Texas occupies was originally part of Mexico. But, then Western frontiersmen declared independence (not sure when) and it actually existed as the Republic of Texas for 7-10 years. The Texans then realized that they would be better served (economically and militarily) by being part of the United States and they joined in 1845 under President James Polk.
