Jackie Robinson! Great in more ways than just his playing ability too! He's an all around great everything! 1st 4 sport letterman at UCLA - officer in the army - courageous ballplayer, fighting the civil war on the baseball field - then on to political involvement in the fight. He is a man whose whole life should be admired by all.

That is a really tough question, considering there are at least seven legitimate contenders(Napoleon Lajoie, Eddie Collins, Rogers Hornsby, Jackie Robinson, Joe Morgan, Roberto Alomar, Craig Biggio) for the top spot.
Hornsby was the best hitter, but a so-so fielder, a selfish attitude, and a rude and obnoxious personality. Collins was the smartest player, great at positioning, but no power, but played when nobody had power. Morgan was a good fielder, and a master of astro-turf offense good OBP, decent power, and great baserunning. He also is obnoxious. Robinson was actually a great fielder, very good hitter, and great leader. He also had a short carrer, not allowed to start until age 28, and by age 35 diabetis slowed him down a lot, and played in a era where nobody stole bases.
I reluctantly give the nod to Morgan, but I would rather have Jackie Robinson be on my team as the 2nd baseman.

This is really an easy question particularly if you are asking about offensive statistics. Rogers Hornsby had a lifetime batting average of .358 with 3 seasons over .400 with a high of .424 in 1924. He also had 301 homers in his career and 2930 lifetime hits. Defensively I would say that Bill Mazeroski is the best. Other greats include Joe Morgan, Ryne Sandberg, Charlie Gehringer, Jackie Robinson, Eddie Collins and Nap Lajoie.

The tops in history are Joe Morgan, Rogers Hornsby, Nap Lajoie, Jackie Robinson, Brian Gehringer, and Eddie Collins.
However, Craig Biggio is surely to be amongst the best all-time once his career is over.

Robby Alomar, with his ability to steal bases, bit for average and being in my opinion hands down the best defensive 2nd baseman ever its got to be him.
