The wonders of Cathay (China) were a prize indeed, spices, silks, exotic animals, etc., Marco Polo was the first foreign traveler to actually write about it. Europeans craved for these things and it seemed like a fantastic land. Of course if you take a look at the book itself it is full of fantasy and of course the artist who drew the pictures took license with them and created some really exotic creatures. It seemed all the travelers wanted to get there, actually Columbus was searching for a way to get there when he came upon the American continent, remember geography was sketchy at the time and even the most learned of men still thought that the earth was flat and if you sailed on and on you could even fall off. The book created so many expectations that it launched an era of sailing that led to many discoveries.
