I am just like that, I was only just saying to someone else how the smallest of things, like a story on TV will spark a bad memory in which I've done something stupid and then I sit and contemplate it for days!
I believe it is down to who you are as a person, you know you're not perfect but that doesn't stop you feeling this way - it actually points to you being a very compasionate and caring person who thinks about the effects of her actions on other people.
The best technique I have found for calming myself when it happens is breathing exercises and focusing on an event where I made someone happy so I can realise that without the mistake I wouldn't be developing and growing as a person

You sound just like me. I used to go over things a thousand times in my head. When I started a new job, I was so hard on myself that I couldn't sleep, felt sick every morning, and had panic attacks. All because I was not perfect. I finally went to the doctor and she put me on anti-anxiety medication. It changed my life. I'm much happier because I have a clearer mind, and laugh and learn from my mistakes. I'm also more successful at my job now...and I love it.

Maybe you need to learn to accept and like yourself. Were you told repeatedly (as a child) that you are stupid? Move on and recognize that although you are not perfect, you are able to learn from your mistakes. When you can do this, you will no longer feel the need to berate yourself repeatedly.

well, if it makes u feel better, u're not the only one that has this problem. I guess it's tough accepting that sometimes u do things without putting good thought into when u had ability to prevent it. It just didn't hit you at that time. It's tough, but its natural part of all humans, just some intend on dwelling on more than others.

This is one of lifes age old mysteries. I am the same yet in the same breath I know that not only am I not perfect but no-one else is either so why do I think I should be? Good question but no answer! Nice to know I'm not the only guilt ridden person around though.

It's easy to say nobodies perfect but harder to make yourself believe it especially in relation to yourself. I know I'm not perfect ut I'm hard on myself when I make a mistake. I suppose it's human nature.

Start by forgiving yourself for whatever you do, correct or incorrect. You are too hard on yourself - nobody's perfect. Relax and enjoy your life. However, never contradict your morals or principles, because that is when you cross yourself. And in that area, only you are the judge. Be true to yourself.

Simply speaking, you are the one you know most about. Most everyone turns the microscope on their own feelings (rather than looking at every move of someone else). We are all in the same boat, and take comfort that no one else is scrutinizing you as closely and harshly as yourself. So lighten up and have a good time!
