A baby who is born preterm is a baby who is born before 37 weeks. The earliest I've ever heard of was a baby born at 5 1/2 months. Before the baby was born though a shot was given to the mom to help the baby's lungs develope faster so it would have a better chance at life after being born.

Preterm babies spend much time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).Many stay till the date the mother was supposed to have given birth and sometimes after.

24 weeks is considered viablity. Meaning the baby has a chance of survival, but with medical advances some babies can survive as low as 22 weeks, but usually have long term problems. Preterm in itself is just considered having the baby before the completion of the 37th week. Hope that helps...

A 21 week old baby survived, so its possible at that time. Usually they say after week 23 or 24 is when they will survive. My 3rd son was born at 34 weeks and went home with me 2 days after he was born. He was perfectly healthy and breathing just fine. All babies develop at different rates.

After 23 weeks a baby has a decent chance of living outside the womb, but would definitly be in the hospital for a few months.

36 weeks is considered full term. My niece was born at 28 weeks and she was in the hospital for 3 months. there was just recently a baby born at 23 weeks and survived. I wouldn't want to risk it though.
