Manifest Destiny is the belieft that it was the colonists' God-given right to expand from sea to sea (ie east coast to west coast). Basically, it was the believe that Americans should have two coasts (Atlantic and Pacific). This, obviously, was fulfilled

Manifest destiny is a belief in the late 1800s and early 1900s that Americans had. It was basically the belief that it was their god-given right to move on westward and control all the lands "from sea to shining sea," and Native Americans weren't going to stop them from that right.

A journalist by the name of John O'Sullivan first came up with it to justify the annexation of Texas. Originally, O'Sullivan put the idea forth as 'god wants us to bring republican democracy to all of north america.'
The democrats in 1845-55 picked up on the idea and used to as an excuse to annex all of Oregon. Later in 1890, the Republicans picked it up and tried to expand the country outside of North America, but Lincoln basically said no, let's get what we have in order first before we try and expand the country even further.
Over time, the terms has come to mean different things to different people and it has been misused as an excuse for some pretty horrible acts in the expansion process.
