Not all, but I think it's because as you get older, even for women, the hair starts to thin. Long straggly, thin hair isn't as attractive? (But I think in ponytails, up in buns, etc, are.) I'm gonna have to retract that cuz, it reminds me of the older Rose on Titanic -when she tosses the heart into the ocean.... had longer hair & it looked just fine!
But... some short hair cut styles may make the hair look neater & fuller.

It's probably because the older you get, the more brittle and thin your hair gets. Plus, there would be no volume to it (every woman looks better with volume. It signifies youth). It would look nasty if it were long. That's why lots of older women keep it short or get perms. The hair looks thicker, and it seems like there's more volume too. It has to do with the whole "looking youthful" idea.

That's sweet because I never want to cut my hair when I get old. I want long white hair!! They cut it short because they say it makes them look younger and thinner It's true. True that they Say That!!

I've always thought it was because they just don't want to deal with long hair anymore. It is a pain in the a*s. My grandmother refused to do that though. She's 92 and has shoulder length hair. She always has it pinned up though.

Because as they get older they can't keep up with long hair and some do as long as they can until they can't put it up any longer and then they have to have it cut

I had a conversation about this two days ago in the beauty shop...The elderly ladies said it was easier to take care of...I should have asked them, how they keep the same hair for a week??? Meaning they get it washed and style once a week...EEK Dirty grannies....

Sorry to say that not old ladies have short hair. I don't! That's just some kind of typical sterotype from youngsters.

Easier to handle and keep it neat, plus, it was in style when they were younger. Kind of like the plastic blobs old ladies of the 60s wore.

Their hair gets very thin in later years and grays or turns white. If they get it short and permed it will have body and be very managable.

sorry not all older women have short hair my grandma is 80 yrs old and her hair goes to her butt and yes its her real hair
