Before academic politics and the powers that be founded the National College Athletic Association, Basketballs National Invitational Tournament was the tournament that crowned our national champion. As the years rolled by, television, tournament sponsor's and thus school recognition led to teams accepting invitations to the NCAA Tournament versus the NIT.
Now to answer your question....Out of the 350 or so colleges and universities throughout the US that are eligible for both tournaments only 64 are invited to the NCAA which leaves quite a few teams/schools that need the national recognition and sponsorships that provide the money for the scholarship funds. Funds that are relied on to ascertain and attract, not only brilliant athletes, but brilliant Mathematicians, Doctors and many others that may not even have heard of these schools. Like the smaller tournaments at the beginning of the season, the NIT provides a great advertising media for these schools to get there name in the spot light. It is sad but like so many of our world businesses, and believe me, higher education is a business; it's all about the money.
