My feeling is that your baby is normal and you should let her sleep! Newborns need an unbelievable amount of sleep -- between 14 and 18 hours a day. That doesn't leave much awake time. My babies both slept a lot, more like 20 hours a day, with the remaining four hours broken up in little spurts of eating and diaper changing. Don't worry, it won't last forever. Enjoy the rest while you can still get it!

That is what babies do. I think Drs. should do a better job of telling people this, but you must understand that towards the end of your pregnancy 85% of the time in the womb was spent sleeping and the journey of birth is not only stressful on mother, but also on the baby. Your baby will start to have longer and longer wake periods around one month old, but don't be alarmed if they aren't. Just make sure they are waking up for feedings every 2-3 hours and everything should be fine..

Good luck with your new bundle of joy!

I would not wake a sleeping baby unless she is not feeding well or is not producing enough wet nappies (6-8) a day and you think she needs more feeds (I demand fed my girl and she had about 8-9 feeds a day, approx every 2-3hours). I had a VERY sleepy baby and if you have had a c-section or pethadine during your labour (I did) then this is passed to your bub and it takes a couple of weeks to pass through their system. My girl slept soooooo much and fell asleep during feeds etc etc, but she was fine. She will wake up soon and you will be hankering for her to sleep :)

While she is awake just demand feed her (if you are breastfeeding) and then rest assured she is ok while she is sleeping. Good luck and trust yourself :)

All of this advice you will get it well and good BUT if you feel at all worried, talk to your paed or local doctor. A new mum stressed out is no good and sometimes a "professional" opinion makes you sleep more soundly.

Best,
Rita

That is what newborns do...my son started sleeping through the night 11 hours at a time when he was 2-1/2 weeks old. I am a firm believer that if they are sleeping then leave them alone. At that age, they will wake up and cry when they want to eat.

My son did the same thing but was loosing weight. More than the normal. He lost like 1 1/2 lbs. He wasn't getting enough milk. As long as her weight is fine then I would not worry, alot of babies sleep almost all day. Enjoy it while you can.

ENJOY IT! They grow up so fast and stop sleeping when you want them to. So sit back and watch her sleep. Take lots of pictures and just love that little one with all your heart. Give it a little time and you will be up all hours of the night with feedings. Once that is over you will have some down time where he/she actually sleeps longer than 4 hours at night. Then the teething stage begins....Not an enjoyable time of your life, let me tell you.

Just hang in there though, every minute of every stage of his/her life is well worth it.

Sometimes they sleep too much and can't be woken up because they are almost malnutritioned, and because of that extremely fatigued. Make sure that's not the case, a newborn MUST eat every 3 hours.
