I was shocked when it needed to pay for owning a tv and have to make annual payments.
If anyone else is viewing this not in ireland, would you pay for a television. the one most needed piece of furniture in the world!!

I would very much doubt it - the constitution is very clear about giving the power to levy taxes to the Government and giving approval rights to an Dail. This is why it is the Governemnt that sets the Licence and not the RTE authority. But you could always challenge its legality in the Supreme court but this would cost more than the licence!
