I'm a black Teacher and I've been very, very nice to the other Teachers--mostly white women. I've volunteered to help them on projects and always greet them with a smile. But I recently found out that many of those white women were going behind my back and reporting every mistake I made-- and even lied to the Principal about me--which landed me in trouble (all the white these same women made 100 times more mistakes than me).

Its shocking because these same women smiled in my face and pretended to be my friend --but were stabbing me in the back !! They give off this nice image to the world--but they act like devils behind closed doors...

So, I just wonder: Is it a part of white culture to be very fake on the job--while stabbing people in the back? I think this is a common problem on many job sites.

Serious answers only. Thanks!!

I have white people in my family whom I love--so please dont think I dont like white people.

I can kind of relate to your experience. I'm half Aussie and half American. Sometimes I used to have a rough time in Australia, as a person of color, because we are very minute in number.

One thing I realized is that people are always suspicious of something they don't understand. Being that you may be one of few Black people at work, they may be suspicious of you because many of them are never around black people and don't know much about black folks and they are not open to knowing about you. A lot of folks tend to believe every stereotype the media puts out. You just may be a victim of ignorance and media stereotyping.

You can't really take such things personally. The negative energy can consume your soul and really mess you up, until you start taking on the stereotypes they had about you. Be strong and forgive them, avoid getting involved with such people. Hang around the positive ones that embrace you.

You have to just pity the ignorant and move on. They are missing out on someone who could be a potential best friend just because they are pre-occupied with the amount of melanin(a simple protein) in your skin.

Why are some white people two-faced and phony at work? Why are some Black people, Hispanic people, Asian people, mixed race people two-faced and phony at work?

The problem isn't race, it's the workplace. Different work environments have different cultures. In some places two-faced behavior is acceptable, or even encouraged. In other places honesty and integrity are more valued. Many people (of any race) care more about making themselves look good at the expense of other people. Those are the people that end up having difficulty in the workplace eventually because no one likes or trusts them.

Find yourself a job at a school where people really get along and don't just pretend to. And please don't believe that anyone acts a certain way because of their race. They act that way because they are phony, two-faced jerks.

I was on a bus in East St. Louis about 7 years ago and about 8 young African American men were also on the bus and talking bad about white people in an effort to get me to retaliate. I was getting mad and an elderly African American woman said to me, "we're not all like that." White people are not all like those other teachers either. I've seen people of all races act terrible when they think they have something to gain from putting another down. Its an unfortunate part of society. I remember a young man who took the other approach to making himself look better by trying to make everyone else around him feel good. That's the way we should all be.
