Reptiles would die without enough water, so the leathery skin holds the water in. Unlike us, we release water through our skin and other parts of our body. Thats why we always need to rehydrate ourselves. Reptiles can't always be near a water supply so they need to store the water.

Body water of reptiles that have a dry, horny skin does not continually evaporate through their skin, as does that of an amphibian. So they can live in much drier and hotter places - where the wet-skinned amphibians would perish. Reptiles are ectothermic, meaning they warm up by absorbing heat rather than generating their own heat, like birds and mammals. Since reptiles are cold blooded, they do not need to consume as much food to maintain a body temperature. This gives them a great advantage over warm-blooded mammals, especially in desert areas where vegetation can be sparse. Most reptiles are found in the temperate and tropical regions of the world but some of them can survive in colder regions, going into hibernation when winter hits them.
