Ok guys, here's the deal. I live and study in Germany, in a students' house and we are using a shared connection. There are 3 floors each with 12 rooms in the building. I noticed, that my Internet connection is quite slow at moments. I use regularly the website www.speedtest.net to check my internet speed. My average score is 450 kb/s . Sometimes it's ~ 200kb/s , sometimes it's 600kb/s and s.o. I went to my neighbour's room to check his speed on the same site, using the same server at the same time. We ran 3 tests in a row. The results were stunning for me : he got ~ 1.8mb/s and mine best was ~700kb/s. I decided it could be the LAN-cable. I changed it with his and the results were the same. Then I took my laptop to his room and used his telephone bush . The results were the same. So where could be the problem ? I doubt it it is a hardware problem . Maybe software ? I don't have additional firewalls installed, I'm using the one provided in Windows. I haven't changed any properties. So ?

Your LAN has to share the bandwidth to all of the devices connected to it. If only one device is connected to it, you'll get almost all of the bandwidth.

You may need to change some settings. Go to the site broadband reports. They have a tool section. In the tool section check the tweak test and doctor TCP tool. It'll help you figure out some settings that may help or at least diagnose where the issue is. It should help optimize it some.

Be sure you've done a virus and malware scan, a disk cleanup (or CCleaner is even better - temp files etc) before you change settings.

There are many ways that your Internet Speed is slow. One way is that your neighbor has more RAM than you. Another way is that you are using an illegal downloading program, I hear they slow down your connection. Another is that there are programs that are ''supposed'' to increase downloading speeds.

And I got 1152 Download and 270 Upload on that, and I'm on a wireless connection.

I don't think the windows firewall is adequate. You should download free zone alarm. You should also run some spyware adware software such as ad-aware se by lavasoft and spyboy search & destroy. You'll have to search for that one.

It could be your LAN card or it could be your processor.
If you have one of those integrated LAN, it uses the processor for working. The faster the processor, the faster it can work.
