If you were in a store trying to buy a good book, and someone who doesn't read tells you that the books in the store were garbage and a waste of time.

Would you be stupid or intelligent to accept his/her view?

Do you think the person who doesn't read would be credible or would you ask someone who actually reads for an opinion (preferably someone who read the book you are interested in)?

Both you and he would be stupid.

A) How can a person possibly give a valid opinion on something they know nothing about?

B) Why would you consider the opinion of someone on a topic they know nothing about?

Was this person hanging out with you in the store, or did you just meet him/her there? If the former, I'd be curious as to why he made a rude comment like that. If the latter, I would just ignore it.
Listening to another person's view--even if you don't agree--is intelligent, even mature. Accepting a view that is obviously out of line with the facts--like the one presented by the non-reader--is stupid. The non-reader could be credible in other areas of life, but when it comes to books, he hasn't got a clue.
By all means, ask around and find a person who has read the book and get his opinion. In fact, find -several- such people...the more opinions you get, the better-informed your decision will be. And if you're still not sure, see if you can borrow it from the library first!

Stupid. Why is this a question? This person has no more credibility than a three year old telling you not to read the books because they are garbage. I think this is a no brainer so I am going to guess you might have meant more and need to post a follow-up.

Obviously that's stupid. How and why would you base your decision on something told to you by an ignorant person How would they know what the books are about and the quality of the books if they have never read one. That is just like someone who has never eaten sushi telling you it is nasty. you cant tell someone how something tastes unless you taste it ,so that person would not be a an accurate source.

It would be stupid to accept his view UNLESS every book in the store was written by Persiphone_hellecat....then he would be right....all the books would be garbage and a waste of time.

I would hardly consider the opinion of someone who could read, but did not read the book in question (or at least another book by the author)

But if he doesn't read at all, I would ask why he was even talking to me?

You'd be stupid...extremely stupid. If the person doesn't read, how will they know if the book's any good? I'd ask someone whose read the book to tell me if it's good.

I'd tell the person I could not take there advise because of the lack of expertise on the subject matter.

Then I'd buy the book and hit them over the head with it.

do you really need to ask this...... i don't think asking what books are good reads... to someone who possibly doesn't know how , is a good idea.
