First off, you have to discover why she is unhappy then work on that.

In this case it does sound like she has good reason to be feeling low rather than just miserable for the sake of it.
Whilst many men think chocolates and flowers are good solutions to any kind of upset they are normally a quick fix and sooner or later the saddness will come back.
Most women really appreciate being listened to while they unload thier problems. If they feel someone is really listening it makes them feel secure and loved in a way no amount of chocolate ever will!
Nothing helps you through those feelings better than knowing you have someone truly on your side.
Hang in there it will get better.

So how much space do they allow us here anyway??!
I've been married 18.5 years, and my husband and I owned a business for the last 4 years of it - let me tell you, it ALL comes down to communication and listening.
While buying us presents always makes us temporarily happy, it's only superficial. Eventually we'll remember what pissed us off in the first place.
Most likely you need to talk the situation out, listen to her and ask that she listen to you. Then you'll need to come to a compromise - one that you both can live with, without resenting each other.
I know that I make it sound easy but realize that it is not. However, it does get easier. As you grow together, it gets easier.

Just listen to her. She just needs someone to hear her. Her unhappiness is there because she feels that there is nothing for her to look forward to. Help her find the bright side of life because there is one. There's nothing in her life going on that she can't handle. She's strong no matter the circumstances. Let her know that.

Ask her what she thinks the solution is. And see if she'll solve some of her problems. She may just need you to listen and tell her she can do it. Then give her a hug at anything she resolves to keep her spirits up. If she doesn't improve, maybe counseling?

I've stuck out three times trying to please unhappy women.

If they put their burden on you and drag you down like they have with me... There's no hope for long-term pleasing them no matter what you do.

If she's been unhappy for a long time it's my guess she's chosen to be that way and while she seeks pity from everyone else to try bailing her out (while she blames everyone and ignores being independently responsible for her own actions and situation) - the only way out is for her to get back on her own two feet by herself.

Find out why she's unhappy. You can't please everyone. But find the things that made her happy when you first got together, and try and do those things again.
