Wow, I wasn't expecting so many answers! I've lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for the last 2 1/2 years, and I've seen it get as cold as -52 degrees F. I got heaters installed in my car shortly after I moved here, and I plug in my car all the time in the winter. My sister suggested I ask this question just to see what people would say. I thought maybe people who don't know anything about plugging in cars might answer and think the idea was really weird, but I see that all of you know all about it. Now comes the hard part of picking a best answer among so many good ones...

Some cars for winter environments have external engine warmers. You plug those in and the engine stays warm, and will turn over easily next morning.

Yes, here in Canada we all do it. Most of the time it helps. But when things get really bad, it can screw up. I know people who had problems even with the plug. My dad use it and it works fine and help to start the car in a second.

I started my 318 dodge at 49 below, and while it did start right up, it showed no oil pressure for 4 or 5 minutes. You should use a block heater for extreme cold.

sure, lived in Montana for 10 years... in fact I installed the plug myself, was fairly easy. Keeps the engine oil warm which allows the car to start easier

they have oil-pan heaters you can purchase to keep your oil warm if you live in an area that gets below -10 degrees far.
if you don't then don't worry about it oil is good till then, below that it will gel up Think of jam in oil pan is what gelling is
