In the late 1960's the media was alive with war protests and anti-war music.

Forgive my ignorance, but where/who are the popular artists protesting the US occupation of the Middle East?

Because the music industry has evolved to the point where shallow-*** "artists" care far more about money and not offending anyone.

Many people have in the las few years put out anti-establishment songs and records and have been and still are heavily criticized, and accused of anti-patriotism. Bruce Springsteen ("Devils and Dust"), the Dixie Chicks, Pearl Jam ("Worldwide Suicide," "Severed Hand," etc.), Neil Young ("Let's Impeach the President"), Roger Waters from Pink Floyd ("Leaving Beirut" which takes swipes not only at Bush, but Waters being british, at Tony Blair as well) are some examples that come to mind right now, but there are many more.

Of course, Justin Timberlake, Britney and their kind of "artist" would never dare to put out a song like that, and it is pretty evident which kind of music gets the good press and airplay.

Green Day's American Idiot album did a nice few stabs at the establishment.
It's not the same as the 60's & 70's protest songs, but I know they write quite a few songs about dismay and distrust in the reasons for going to war now.

NOFX. I agree though this is a serious issue. Here in Australia we used to have Midnight Oil but they have separated. They recieved an award though at a recent music show and one of them in his speech said something about where have all the people writing about real issues and protest songs gone and how John Butler can't do it all on his own (but he has some great stuff, The John Butler Trio... check them out)

it seems like it has turned from being anti-establishment to whats wrong with me, not the world? one of the top songs right now is about some dude trying to convince himself not to cheat on his girlfriend with his ex....come on now, surely there are better things to be singing about. i like that song because it is really pretty, but i have to ignore the lyrics. Rage against the machine has anti establishment stuff, they got back together recently, so if we are lucky we will get some new stuff. anti-flag....well the name says it all. there are more, i just dont know of them.

That didn't work, obviously. We need realism and solutions, not whiny songs.
