Why is it that young couples in America are living with each other all over the place even though they are not married? Does anyone still believe in values in this country?

The obscenity laws have been relaxed and the mass media has gone into high gear exploiting it. When young ppl hear all the cursing and four letter words in the movies, they tend to think it's cool and acceptable. And that goes for all sex situations where there are no values portrayed. Also, I knew of some single parents living with someone along with their children. I personally thought that they were setting a horrible example. And that was back in the 80's.

Since the beginning of time, societies have had and still have values, and, since the beginning of time, individuals have been breaking them. Nothing is new in your society or mine except that nowadays the new generations are doing in the open what the old generation had done secretly. What is the value of chastity, for example? Is it in refraining from adultery or is it in hiding it? Of course it is in refraining from doing it, not in looking clean in the appearance but secretly committing adultery or having illegitimate sex. The value is still there, and some people - even from the new generation - are still chaste and respect the values they were up brought with, but what changed is breaking those values in the open rather than discretely. Man and woman have always had sex relations beyond marriage bondages, but they did it discretely, no one knew about those secret relations, therefore societies looked chaste and respectful and every body was deceived by the appearance.

Yes, people still have values, and the fact that some societies have become more open than others does not mean that that society lost the values; it means they have given some existing values more importance than others such as honesty, integrity, faith and openness over “false chastity”, “discreet hypocrisy”, “smart lying” and “skillful cheating”.

I respect the society that tells me, “If you want to do it, do it, but don’t hide it or lie about it” So, if I choose to live with a woman without marriage and hide it, do I still have the chastity value? The new generation is doing the same, but they are more honest about it. Of course I am not saying they will still have the value if they do so, but I am saying at least they are honest about their bad conduct, which gives them a credit over the hypocrite who breaks the value and hides it.

value doesn't signify nor marriage nor religion.
value is something one believe's in, one thinks it's worth to live according to it. we, younsters, still have values, just that they are different that those of other generations. and that is normal, imagine a society where nothing changes over time, where children are born old and bored, without enthousiasm or thirst for life. i believe your question should have been if is there anyone if america with your values, and the answer to that will be: yes, people from your generation

I'd prefer to live with another person, even before marriage to learn more about him/her.

Some men are mommy's boys and for others, you won't know a person's character until you've lived together.

Anyways, your idea of "values" seems slightly warped. After all, there are many different religions and no religion reigns supreme.

And I find that applying society's expectations and stereotypes to a person is unfair. After all, I know of this woman who thought she was going to have a marriage made in heavens and her husband turned out to be a real screwball at home. When he was outside though, he was such a gentleman but at home, he hit her not just with his hands but with other objects like a bat, an iron, etc.

He even raped her in front of his friends who later participated in the rape, too. And he did that right when his children were home, too. When she tried to seek help from the police for the rape, he manipulated her children into siding with him. Later, she was even more devastated when she found out that he'd taped the whole scene and distributed it on the net in an attempt to "discredit" or "dishonour" her.

(There are a lot more whacko cases even worse than this concerning newlyweds. And had the involved parties knew what they were getting into, I strongly believe the majority wouldn't have gone through with the marriage or would've opted to co-habitat so as to try and solve the issues before they got married.)

Then, there're those who grew up with families which had rather screwed-up values and can't bear to get married. Like those families where the husband and wife are completely incompatible but refuse to break up or do anything about their marriage as to acknowledge otherwise would run counter to their beliefs of "good family values". Often, in such families, either one or both parties end up having affairs, full-blown tit-for-tats which often result in violence. In the end, it's the children who get dragged into the mess.
