Minidisc is still a great format, and sounds better than CD, the recordings are more natural and less 'clinical' than CD...
the good thing about it is, your precious recordings will stay safe dust free scratch/fingerprint free for ever..
i still use it all the time, fashion has nothing to do with it, you use what you want to use, regardless...
if you can still buy blank minidiscs, then the format is still alive.

It was a format that gave no more quality than CD meant you had to buy a new machine etc - The CD Rewriters and PCs/Macs with iTunes and then MP3s or similar came along and you could buy make cd compliations really quickly and cheaply. Minidiscs stopped being made as albums and the format had a reinvention for a while with the ability to record in 4LP and it still sound relatively good meaning you could fit about 4 hours onto one disc, but then along comes the iPod and similar iPods can take enough tracks to play for a month and not repeat a song, so the format has all but died out. CDs are still with us as the CD player is cheap widespread and of course DVD players play then as do computers etc.
I do wonder though if in 10 years time CDs will be like Cassettes MiniDisc and Vinyl something for the history books and the only way to get music will be from the net in some format or other!

MD's are more expensive to make than CDs so alot of companies didnt put much advertisement into them. Technicaly they didnt become obscelete(sp?), they just couldnt get them off the ground. Another big thing was the production of cd players heavily outweighed the production of MDs

Ye i bought a combined mini-disc/cd player/ hi-fi system. biggest mistake i made cost an arm and a leg, mini disc doesn't work, would cost more to get it fixed so better of buying whole new hi-fi. Go back to cd's least you know you will always get your hands on them.
