It's not an alternative string theory, but I think it is a good alternative to string theory. I think it has a much more intuitive connection to a sense of physical reality. String theory is pure math, without evidence or verifiable predictions. But that's simplistic and subjective. It certainly doesn't have the popular appeal and hype.
