If the room colour is something neutral...
3 years - If you want to keep the room look super fresh. If you and friends smoke a lot it becomes dirty within a few months.
5 years - You might start to feel you might want to freshen up the walls because it becomes a bit murky. Dark colours don't necessarily stay looking fresh for many years.

How long is a piece of string?
It all depends on wear and tear, there is no recommended time to re-paint, just when you think it's necessary or you are tired of the current look.
