first thing, go shut the gas off now.

with the gas off you need to take the joint apart and replace the sealant, either teflon tape or pipe joint compound.

really no other safe way to fix. tightening further won't work because the thread has probably bottomed out.

soapy water is really the best way to check for leaks. use a small paint brush or a basting brush to apply the mixture and watch for bubbles. if you have good coverage with no bubbles you have no leaks. check ALL joints carefully.

the gas service is always willing to check for leaks but over here they won't fix it, instead they red tag and shut down the service.

good luck and be careful

go to the gass meter there is a valve there turn it 90 degrees so the line is going across the pipe ull understand find the nearest spot to disconect buy some pipe dop (never use tape its not allowed any more) and disconect everythign up to that joint and then put it back together.... soap is very affective all plumbers use it , i kno i do oh and dont be afraid of the gass smell that wil linger around for ahile open some windows and door let air breeze in while you disconecting and remeber to rlight any standing pilots you may have (water heater boiler furnace, stove , gas log ect.

Soap and water is the best general way to test for leaks.
We do it all the time.
But it sounds like you need to turn the gas off and disassemble the piping to find what is wrong.

Call a licensed plumber though please. We really are not that expensive.

I would have to cut it if it doesn't come undone then replace the pipe but the soap and water method works great

Turn the friggin gas off before it gets worse and you asphyxiate or blow the house up. Call the gas company to get it fixed since you're not sure on how to repair it.
