In the city itself, I'd choose the South End simply because I like action and all kinds of people. However, if I lived anywhere down-town, I'd store my valuables far away.

In the area, there are lots of places around Route 128 that have public transportation.. I don't think you can find a house for less than $450 grand, so take this into account. Actually, I grew up in Arlington and they DO have a great school system.. It's not as ethicly diverse as Cambridge (little Boston), which is where I wanted to bring up my children.. Oh for an apartment or house just west of Harvard Square... Brattle St, by the Charles River or maybe Concord Ave.. In between them there's some GREAT mansions and manicured lawns... THAT's the place.
I'm currently 1/2 way between Boston and Providence. It's a lot cheaper here, and I can get to the Boston suburbs or Providence in 1/2-3/4 of an hour...I've got over an acre and wetlands/forest around me (along with civilization) less than $350K,

Belmont Massachusetts is great. It is near Boston, which is great for people who work there. However, it is a small town too. It is also a 30 minute drive from some beaches as well! It is a great place to live, with low crime, and near Boston!

Jamaica Plain is nice and gorgeous (finding affordable apartments is not hard but buying a house there is expensive)

Brookline is good but apartments there can be pricey. To funny, Brookline is a Boston neighborhood and therefore not outside Boston.

Back Bay/South End is great but is the most expensive part of living in Boston.

Charlestown is good, North End is good also.

i wouldn't suggest actually living in boston - too chaotic!

but some nice areas outside of boston are -

brookline (it's literally right next to boston and there are some gorgeous areas / houses.)

arlington (that's where i grew up. it's about 20 mins outside of boston - fairly small, great school system, low crime)

belmont (like arlington - little more money flowing there though!!)

then there are places like medford (which is where i live now...it's right next to the city, some really nice areas, some pretty run down areas. it has more of a "city feel" than the ones i listed above)

good luck!

Depends. If you're younger, you want to be in the area where it's safe to live but close to all that's happening, I recommend Cambridge. It's close by all the hot spots but safe enough to walk around...
If you're older, you want to move a bit futher, such as Lexington where it's quieter but you can still commute for all city business... :)

I live in Brighton and I love it. It's close to downtown and Cambridge, has public transportation (buses and the Green Line), and it has lots of students and restaurants and bars and stuff going on. Also parks and all kinds of other stuff.

Newbury Street, Marlborough Street, Bay State Road. That's where I'd want to live anyway.
