It is copyrighted automatically. Put the sign on anything you print or publish.

if you created it, you own the copyright on it automatically. You have two further problems:

1. Telling everyone you own the copyright

(c) Your Name 2007 on every page (as appropriate) is enough. You need no special permissions to mark up with the copyright sign - as long as it really is yours, it's your right.

2. Proving you own it if you are ever challenged

hopefully this won't arise. But it pays to take care over this. One method is to send a copy of your work to yourself in an envelope which gets a datestamp on it and remains closed. This isn't foolproof. You could also make sure there is an independent witness who sees your work early on and is willing to state that they saw it. Or if it's in a notebook, sign and date it and get someone to countersign, then keep using the notebook to build up cronology.

You need to use the copyright symbol. You automatically have copyright over whatever you produce but you need to asert those rights or you leave your work open to be stolen by others.
