The north had most of the industry and the south had a large numbers of the farms, and industry was sparse. It was more acceptable to have slaves in the south,due to the farms.
The north had more of a contingent of people who opposed the use of slaves. Blacks up north had a better chance to be able to read, even though it had been made against the law to teach slaves such things.
Families were closer nit in the lower states because of the culture taught, they felt that their way of life was under attack.
A lot of people did not have slaves in the lower states because they were expensive, or did not agree with slavery.
