I just downloaded "NHL 95 full CD" from some abandonware site. I opened it, and it has a whole bunch of files inside (like 'uniforms.cfg' and 'blahblah.ppv').

How do I run this game? I run windows XP. I tried downloading "dosbox" but I went to open it, and a black box popped up and then vanished. So that failed.

Do i have to go to 'start, run,CMD'? What do I type in there to get the game to go?

I have no clue, PLEASE HELP!

NHL 95 could very well have been written for Windows 95, and not DOS, or possibly both.

Right-click on the CD Drive icon and choose 'explore', look for a setup.exe file. Right-click the file and choose 'Properties', click on the 'Compatibility' tab, and choose Windows 95. click apply, then ok.

double click the setup file to install the game.

when finished, apply the same right click compatibility setting to the games main executable. ex. Nhl95.exe

For a game that was written in '95, you would have to use a system that is '98 or older. Because of the difference in the way DOS was phased out with command prompt and the file system was changed, your game will not function properly unless it is run on software that it was built for. A comparison: it would be like trying to put a Nintendo controller into the Wii system. Although made by the same company, the difference in hardware and software will prevent the controller to do anything useful on the Wii system.

WinXP does not support DOS in the way that Win98 or Win95 did. you will have to get a DOS Emulator in order to run Older DOS based games. The best one out there is DOSBox. I would suggest you start your search there for a solution.

If theres an img file, you need to burn the files to a disk, if theres a batch file you can run in dos, if theres an exe, you should be able to double-click to execute, if not open in in the command prompt.

Hope that helps.

Look for a file that has "exe" at the end. That's an executable file that will start the game.

And make sure you check the software for viruses first.
