My favourite subject! (im training tobe a hurricane tracker, so will try to do things simply!)
Hurricanes begin as a mass of thunderstorms. when there is a sharp difference in temperatures between two areas of the storm, they start to spin (Cold air meets warm air etc.) as the system spins, the system pulls in more clouds and the air pressure drops in the middle, causing it to spin more etc. its a vicious circle until some thing changes, causing ti to slow down.
Hurricanes form around america mainly staring in the Gulf of mexico, cuba and california areas. however tropical storm systems form around Japan, Australia India and eastern Africa. anywhere where there is warm water.
the worst to occur to date for cost wise was Hurricane Andrew in 1992 causing$26.5 Billion worth of damage. the most deaths was the Bangladesh Cyclone in 1970 causing 300,000 deaths. the longest: Hurricane John in 1994 lasting 31 days
the sale rating is the Saffir Simpson Scale rating speeds in knots:
tropical disturbance -33 kt
tropical storm - 34 kt
tropical cyclone - 64kt
Category 1 - 64 kt
Category 2 - 83 kt
Category 3 - 96 kt
Category 4 - 114 kt
Category 5 - 136 kt +
Hope this helps
