I would DEFINITELY recommend staying in the residence halls at first. It can be difficult with roommates and sharing bathrooms and loud dirty halls, but you make friends so easily, you're always aware of the social life around campus, and it's much easier to figure out where you fit in. If you live on campus you can find friends to live with later on whether that is on campus again or in apartments. If you hate it, you can always move out on your own but I'd say it's important to experience both residence halls first and then apartments.

I preferrred an apartment when I was in college. I hated sharing a bathroom with a gang of girls - it was always noisy and dirty. In an apartment, I only had a couple of roommates so the noise and mess were minimal.

I also hated dining hall food. Back when I was in school, they didn't have all the meal plan options thay have today. I was much happier cooking for myself than eating institutional food.

I did have a longer walk to campus that the students in residence halls, though. There are always trade-offs.

It depends on what type of person you are. If you are a private person and want lots of freedom of movement, then get an apartment. Be sure to find a roommate (if applicable) that you like and check her/him out first. Don't be afraid to run credit checks on them. If you are looking for lots of fun, very little privacy and meeting people easily.. then a residence hall is definitely a fit!

if you are a private person, like your own space/freedom, i'd suggest an apartment.
a resident hall is more beneficial to get to know people and make friends though.

Apartments are better for independence, studying, having space, felling like an adult... but dorms are better, especially for freshman, socializing, getting involved with campus life, having support groups, making friends.
