I think it is because in the past two years there have been numerous petitions circling with thousands of signatures asking Disney to add a black princess to their princess line. I guess they wanted those people to know their voice had been heard.
It's about d*** time is all I can say.

actually Disney did do some clammoring about the racial make up of when they did movies like Aladdin, Pocahontas, Lilo & Stitch and Mulan.
It's a bit much to say it will be as ground breaking as star wars but it's big news at least because of the fact that I think this might be the first Disney cartoon movie with a black led since song of the south.

Well, I would guess it is because it is 2007 and not only has there not been a black lead in a Disney cartoon, but there have only been 1 or 2 black characters in a Disney cartoon PERIOD. So, it would be kinda hard to just slip in a movie that has a black princess lead as if it was business as usual because it is definitely not. So, they decided to give the public some credit and assume that they would notice, and go ahead and address it.

Pocahontas was a Native American and Jasmine of Aladdin were just racially paired to where they lived.I think it's dumb that they announced a black princess. We are all the same once we really think

Disney's attempt at "look how great we are, we are making another character that isn't another white girl that looks exactly the same as the last...aren't we great?"
It annoys me when people go one about these "firsts" that should have happened long ago...between Disney...the first woman "speaking of the house" in the government, and so on...eesh...why the big deal... It is sad that these things only happen NOW, so why need to point it out...

If they didn't announce it this way, I'm sure there would also be complaints. It doesn't matter what they do, or how they handle it, someone will always be upset.

Yeah, that was pretty lame. Of course, it also begs the question of what took them so long.
