Try ibuprofen (nurofen), this is a muscle relaxant, so should be better. Also try a warm bath, or a hot water bottle on your tummy or back (make sure you wrap it up so you don't burn yourself). Some people say exercise helps, I don't find this, but you might like to give it a go.
If you get really bad period pains every month, you could try seeing your doctor about painkillers, or maybe start taking (or switching) the pill?

Assuming you have no ulcer type problems an anti-inflammatory might seem reasonable. You would need to see your GP for anything stronger than Ibuprofen. Definitely avoid codeine containing pain killers such as co-codamol as they constipate are addictive and only 5% more potent than paracetamol.
If that didn't work hormones are probably the next step, either the OC or a progesterone. This would depend on your age, past history and smoking history.

Ive suffered for 31 years -and still do and the only thing that works even a bit for me is paramol. Hot water bottle against lower back will also help. My friend took her daughter to the docs because it made her so ill and he suggested taking nurofen for a few days before she's due and I do believe it did help things slightly.
There are of course these new tens machines and Ive heard very good reports about them but like everything, what works for one has no effect on someone else.
I hope you find a method to help you -you have my sympathy.
All the very best to you.

I feel really sorry for you I used to suffer really bad with heavy periods, I have no answer but try the doctors or chemists they may help. I do believe in a healthy diet cutting out most harmfull saturated fats etc. any maybe a little excercise. Bike riding is good. or snuggling on the sofa with a hot water bottle.

The only drug that works for me is Ibuprofen. I take about 800mg first thing in the morning and 400-600mg every two hours afterwards. If I have the day off from work I use a heating pad on my stomach and my back. Be very careful not to take too much drugs, be patient and wait for it to kick in, otherwise you'll have even more pain (been there, done that).

If they are really bad go to a doctor and get Ponston, they are non addictive, or your doc will prescribe a suitable solution. Why live in pain when there are modern medicines you can take, and after all it's only once a month so you don't have to be popping pills all the time.

Everyone is different but i swear by those liquid neurofen capsules. Other than that try a good old fashioned hot water bottle or warm bath. My friend swears by exercise (an hour on the treadmill!) but ive come to the conclusion that she's just insane.

You can take paracetamol and nurofen together with no ill-effect, the two painkillers together might take the edge off it a bit. (Link to NHS website below you can check out for yourself)
And I also suggest the hot water bottle and into bed early. Feel better tomorrow x
