Santiago calls the marlin his "brother" and given the author's sympathetic treatment of the old man, we must understand that as his "brother," the fish cannot be evil or that would suggest Santiago is also corrupted. We can find darkness in the shark that destroys the fish after the fisherman has bonded with the marlin at sea. Unlike the lions he dreams about (who are not threatening in his dream and relate to his youth), Santiago sees the shark as nature's unpredictable destructive force. After his encounter with the marlin, Santiago has accepted that life is cyclical. The fisherman now believes that despair is tantamount to sin and the novel ends on a positive note.

Yours is an interesting question, but I have to say that there are writers out there who just write without any thought on how or why their stories will be dissected in the future. Given this, it could be that stories are like art: It means different things to different people.
