Even though the vast majority of women who have sex do so electively, enough without precaution, doesn't that mean they've already chosen, with the possibility that the end result is a baby?
I thought healthcare meant treatment of illness and disease and preventative diagnostic care.
Is therefore, an elective abortion treating a 'disease'? Clearly not. So, why define it as a medical procedure? It sure 'cures' a problem, though not a medical one.

Illtrix, if nobody stands up for the rights of the unborn, their battle is lost. Grow some self-restraint and responsibility and this problem goes away.

To the 4th poster down, you're very wrong. A fetal heartbeat is detectable in the 1st trimester. I witnessed my own daugther's. That's a life. Period.

Illtrix, your D & C analogy is a convenient medical 'cover'. I make this issue my business because I care.
If nobody stood up for blacks, would the Civil Rights movement have gone anywhere? At least they had a voice. Babies don't, but by your logic, people who are against something de facto should "mind their own business".

Vegas - did you read the detail? It says "MOST" - I'm excluding rape victims in this analysis.

I think it's pretty clear that the drawn and quartered fetus is it's own body and should therefore be able to decide what happens to it. I've seen video of fetuses trying to escape the forceps. The only thing I can compare to that is seeing that journalist get his head cut off.

I don't think that partial birth abortion shoudl be allowed and I am celebrating the fact that it has been banned for the moment. The way I see it is there is enough technology in the medical field to keep a 20 week baby alive. There is no freaking need to kill it. And as far as the mother's life at risk, I don't really believe it. Yes I know women have complications from pregnancy and it can be life threatening but if a woman is pregnant and she loves this child and wants this child more than anything then she isn't going to kill it just to save her own life. She is going to try everything even if that means inducing labor, having that child and trying to save it no matter how premature it is. This partial birth abortion goes as far as some 16 year olds having babies and right as the head is crowning the doctor kills it so it doesn't take its first breath of air to declare it was a living thing. Breathing doesn't make you a living being, a heart beat makes you a living being. And that starts when a baby is 6 weeks in utero. I am completely against abortion, in all aspects of it. And I am currently pissed off at the sentate people here in SC because they are working on passing a bill that makes it illegal for a doctor to make a woman watch the ultrasound of the child she is getting ready to abort. I think every single woman who chooses to abort this innocent life they have taken a part in creating should be force to see it before she kills it. Abortion is not a medical procedure its an easy way out for irresponible people who can't have safe sex. But this is just the opinionated rant of just one person. I can't change the world.

I m not in favour of elective abortions for getting rid of a baby just because a woman is not in the mood of having that baby...this is illegal and murder 'abortion without any cuase" and ofcourse it would just be a medical procedure....... but ther are types of abortions where it is done for treatment of illness and disease and preventive diagnostic care........Like a lady who has some heart peoblems , respiratry , liver , psycological etc, and she concieves somehow, not able tocarry it or would cause a great damage to her health if she carries it, abortion is allowed and this is actualy where elective abortions fit to the medical terminologies !

even though I know abortion exists I do not believe it in unless there are certain reasons I.E. Rape or death meaning if you have this child it will kill you.....I think that if you didn't want a child there are things that you can do to prevent it condoms birth control abstinence you are taking a life and that is what a fetus is a life out of this world whom didn't ask to be here give him/her a chance there are plenty of people out here who can't have children that will care for the child with open arms. Killing the baby only gives you a conscience later down the road

Apparently it falls under cosmetic surgery according to the lefties. It seems to fit the bill; an elective choice, no real medical condition, superficial, shallow, selfish, etc...
Isn't hearing the heart beat in the first trimester awesome?! That was one of the most amazing experiences of my life! Kinda like...Squish Squish Squish Squish Squish Squish

Abortion is murder periord. It should NEVER be used as birth control, there is pleanty of birthcontrol avai;able before sex. There are also a whole lot of couples willing to adopt a new born. I resnt tax dollars going to murder the innocent. If a woman has an abortion simply because she doesnt want it, sterilize her!

Obviously you are a man. What if a woman was raped, or if she was going to die because of the pregnancy????? She shouldn't have the abortion???? You really need to keep your nose out of something that has nothing to do with you. Know what your talking about, unless you suddenly grew a uterus, then don't preach to those of us who do. I am totally pro-choice, and though an abortion is something I would not do, it doesn't mean that I would even think of telling someone else that they shouldn't have one. Until you walk in someone Else's shoes, don't tell them how to live their life!!!!!!

No, abortion is not JUST a medical procedure, but it is a procedure performed by medical professionals. The legalization of that procedure means that women - of all ages - of all parties - have the opportunity to choose what happens to THEIR bodies...without having to worry about going to a backstreet somewhere and risking their lives.
I know, I know...they don't want to risk THEIR lives...but they are happy enough to risk or end the lives of their babies. Knew that was coming. But for those of us who believe in the woman's right to choose (which is the LAW, by the way), it is their life that is protected by the constitution...not one that cannot sustain itself outside the womb.

MATERNAL MORTALITY
Between 1970 and 1980, maternal mortality in the U.S. decreased from 21.5 to 9.4 deaths per 100,000 live births, a 56 percent drop. However, from 1980-1998, the rate remained between 6 and 7 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. In 2000, there were 396 maternal deaths related to complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, a rate of 9.8 per 100,000 live births. While the number of maternal deaths can vary from year to year, the change in the number of maternal deaths since 1998 also reflects new classification and coding of maternal deaths starting with 1999 data.
In 2000, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women (22.3 per 100,000 live births) was greater than three times the rate for non-Hispanic White women (6.8 per 100,000 live births) and more than twice the rate for Hispanic women (9.9 per 100,000 live births).
The risk of maternal death increases with age. In 2000, women aged 35 and older had nearly three times the risk of death as women aged 25-29 (22.7 and 7.9 per 100,000 live births, respectively). Black women aged 35 and older had the highest rate of maternal mortality of approximately 63 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Since this also really indicates that with a lack of health care the chance of DEATH from pregnancy and delivery really increases it pretty much CLARIFIES abortion as a MEDICAL PROCEEDURE.
At present, it seems to be impossible to make men responsible for THEIR CHILD once it is delivered. Therefore, I think since the woman faces both the RISK OF DEATH and the brunt of of the finacial care of the child, it should be up to them to decide if they want to risk a pregnancy or not.
