they are not evil any more than magic eight balls or dice.

there are no supernatural forces related to an ouija board, and there is no truth in the answers it gives. (with one exception that I will explain in a moment).

the force that moves the pointer on the ouija board is what is known as the ideomotor effect. the ideomotor effect is the influence of what you expect to occur on involuntary movements. This effect has been proven by scientists as influential and respected as Michael Faraday, and it is purely the actions of your mind.

If you ask a question to a Ouija board, and one of the people holding the pointer knows or thinks they know the answer, then they will unconsciously move very slightly towards the letters that will spell out the correct answer. This very slight push wouldn't have much effect, except the Ouija board asks you to facilitate the movement of the pointer, and to allow it to move in the direction it wants to move in. This means that a very slight push from one person causes everyone touching the board to move it in the direction the initial push moved it in.

Ouija boards can therefore give true answers to questions if someone at the table knows the answer already, especially if that person believes they work, because then (s)he will have a stronger expectation that the board will move in the direction of the correct answer.

be assured, however, that there is no danger from using an Ouija board, and there are no supernatural forces at work in them.

The belief that Ouija boards are anything but a lame ploy by a company to prey on the fears of teenage girls is absurd. I remember coming to school one day and there was a crowd of kids playing with an Ouija board. Everybody thought somebody else was moving it while some people outside of the crowd were saying that it was evil. I believed it then and I believe it now: Ouija boards are silly.

I'm not really sure how a plastic/wood board manufactured by an hairy and fat chain employee would receive some power. It's not some shaman or voodoo master. It's a guy getting paid 10$ an hour to fix some toys. He's not putting any special power in the lego block, and guess what? He's not putting any power either in the Ouija board.

I've responded to similar questions on Yahoo! Answers before, and I've replied in so many ways that I don't think Ouija boards are evil. I own a glow-in-the-dark model and I've never been visited by spirits when using it. Superstitious people often attribute ominous characteristics to the most innocuous of items. If you're prone to believe there are evil spirits among us then you're probably apt to believe that Ouija boards are evil or dangerous. I don't. I enjoy scary movies and tales about supernatural or ghostly things, but I've outgrown most of the fears that I developed as a child. I'd encourage you to try out an on-line Ouija board--by yourself.

The Catholic Church answers this question quite clearly.

Strictly speaking, only God knows the future. The d.e.v.i.l.s however, as fallen angels, retain their angelic nature, which gives them an intelligence far superior to ours. Therefore, they can guess about the future with more success than we can and may often be more accurate in their guessing. Most fortune telling, a.s.t.r.o.l.o.g.y and other attempts to foretell the future are sinful superstitions, a violation of the first commandment. However some activities in that area may involve diabolic invocations (ouija boards, tarot cards, etc) and thus can be even more sinful and perilous to salvation.

References to fortune telling can be found in Deut. 18:10 and Jer. 29:8. But the best place to start is with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Fortune telling, magic and sorcery are all addressed (see sections 1852, 2110, 2116, 2117 and 2138), particularly as they relate to the first commandment, "You shall have no other gods before me."

Section 2116 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church says that "all forms of divination are to be rejected." It states that "consulting h.o.r.o.s.c.o.p.e.s, a.s.t.r.o.l.o.g.y, palm reading . . . all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers." The Catechism goes on to warn that desires for future knowledge contradict the "honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone." (http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P7E.HTM)

The use of these things is a form of idolatry and that it takes away from our singular focus on God. The Catechism states in section 2113 that "idolatry rejects the unique Lordship of God; it is therefore incompatible with communion with God."

So, simply put, use of Ouija boards and other forms of divinations are mortal sins (a mortal sin is a grave one which drives out all Sanctifying Grace from your soul that you receive from the Sacraments (http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P6C.HTM)) that turn your back to God and they also allow you to become open to possession.

Yes, possession is real. The following is from the official Catechism (teachings) of the Catholic Church and is found on the official Vatican website (http://vatican.mondosearch.com/cgi-bin/MsmGo.exe?grab_id=0&page_id=15165&query= ic%20possession&SCOPE=EnglishUI&hiword= ic%20possession%20):

"1673 When the Church asks publicly and authoritatively in the name of Jesus Christ that a person or object be protected against the power of the Evil One and withdrawn from his dominion, it is called exorcism. Jesus performed exorcisms and from him the Church has received the power and office of exorcizing.176 In a simple form, exorcism is performed at the celebration of Baptism. the solemn exorcism, called "a major exorcism," can be performed only by a priest and with the permission of the bishop. the priest must proceed with prudence, strictly observing the rules established by the Church. Exorcism is directed at the expulsion of d.e.m.o.n.s or to the liberation from d.e.m.o.n.ic possession through the spiritual authority which Jesus entrusted to his Church. Illness, especially psychological illness, is a very different matter; treating this is the concern of medical science. Therefore, before an exorcism is performed, it is important to ascertain that one is dealing with the presence of the Evil One, and not an illness."

I realise this answer is long but for a subject such as this it is quite important to be clear.

Sadly, like most people who engage in horoscopes, palm reading or psychics, probably view such action as harmless fun.

I have no doubt a few individuals with their own agenda will deny this but then one must question what exactly their agenda is ...

I've never really considered what I thought about it. I don't know if its real or not. However, I do know that if it is real I don't want to play and risk the whole evil spirits thing, and if its not real, I still don't want to play and risk almost deadly boredom.

I don't think that they are evil, but I think that they are dangerous. It is like opening up your door to the world and inviting anyone in that wants to come in. You may get some nice spirits, but you also may get some that are not so nice. I think it is best to find something else to pass your time. Good Luck!

Anything made by a company named "Parker Brothers" that claims to conjure spirits isn't evil--it's lame. Only jerk offs buy into that crap.
