Yes sometimes. They are always noticed when shots slip by them on the way into the net though..lol...and not too appreciated then either.
I guess it depends on how you see the game. I notice them because all players and positions are vital to the overall performance of the team and quite often when it's tight they are the ones focused on as many teams will play to defend the score line.

Sometimes they could be. But look at Cannavro he just won world player of the year. But back to the question, they are, but it also depends who you are and the way you play. Look at Roberto Carlos, he is a damn good defender and HE could score goals too. (Something defenders are not known for) if you can score goals like Roberto, or shut the scores of the other team down then you will be recognized. Also if the other team scores a goal 85% of the time it was the defenses fault. But if you ask players, they think that the defense is the back bone to a good team because it determines the style of play your team will be playing. If you have good defenders than you can attack with more players, and not have to worry about the defense messing up. And if your defense sucks you have to keep players back to help them out. So to me defense is the most important positions and the most deserving of appreciation of the teams and fans.

I would completely agree with you. The reason that defenders are sometimes less appreciated than the other players are because they are EXPECTED to do what they do best. Defend. Forwards and midfielders might be the stars of more games because they are the ones scoring, or the goalies because they are making the miraculous saves, but in reality, you cannot win a game without strong defense. Defenders are not expected to score goals or to make amazing saves, they are the players who save more goals than anyone can count, and are the backbone of the team.

Anybody who really knows a lot about football knows that Brazil has one of the worst defense in the World. The Reason Why they manage to win games and tournaments is because of their strong offense, they attack ferociously and keep the other teams on their toes. In most cases, The best defense is a strong offense.

Yes I do. Strikers and midfielders have the flashy positions. Scoring goals and assisting goals is much more exciting to the general audience. But, without a solid defense no team could win a match.

Not necessarily, but it might be more difficult for them to make a real impression.
However, Desailly was the defender of the French team in 1998 and was recognized as one of the best players in the world!

Yes. Just a couple of days ago a friend asked me who I thought are 10 most underrated players. The first that came into my mind were all defenders. It's really difficult to name an underrated striker!

not for me. i think defenders are the backbone of a team. some of the best players today are defenders. we see many examples like JT in chelsea, roberto ayala in valencia, puyol in barca, vidic in man u, zanetti in inter, and many more. notice how their team suffers when they're not around? someone once told me that all creative plays start with defenders and i think he's right. you gotta get to the ball before you can even score.

In the press, certainly, as most defenders don't make headlines. However, by true soccer fans who are students of the game, I would disagree.
Defenders I believe are world class footballers and enjoy watching include:
Lucio, Maldini, Nesta, Puyol, Terry, Ayala, Cicinho, and Daniel Alves.
