The speed of light is more of an incident than a speed .
An incident takes time to achieve.
A photon moving through space travels as fast as it can.
The universe is made up of quantum entities this includes time pulses.
If you take the shortest time pulse and try to slit it,make it smaller it goes out of existence.
If you try to surpass the speed of light you are trying to force an incident to happen in a shorter time than can exist in the universe.

In theory there is such a particle that always moves faster than light called a tachyon. However they would have specific interactions with normal matter. Detectors have been set up by scientist to look for tachyons but none have ever been recorded.
As for normal matter, we know that nothing with mass can go as fast as light from Einstein's equations. These equations have been proven over and over again. For example, in particle accelerators, as they speed up particles to close to the speed of light time slows down for the particles. So the fact that nothing with mass can go the speed of light has been proven in many experiments. Since light is pure energy without mass it always moves at the speed of light.

Tachyons are hypothetical particles that always travel faster than light. You're right that we wouldn't see them, because it is thought that Tachyons cannot interact in any way with sub-light particles or fields. That's because of the following: if you take energy away from a Tachyon, it goes even faster than before. This would allow extraction of an infinite amount of energy from a Tachyon, and is therefore thought to be impossible. Tachyons can never "cross the light barrier" and go slower than the speed of light.

In fact, there's a theoretical partical called a 'tachyon' which can't go *slower* than the speed of light. But what Einstein said was that *information* could not move faster than the speed of light.

It's based on the idea that matter is ultra dense energy and that if it did travel at the speed of light it would break apart and revert into energy. similar to the way an aircraft falls apart if it travels too fast.
