I thought he ran as an independent because his party ousted him in the primary for not being a coward.

Joe Lieberman ran as an Independent, not a Libertarian. He lost the Democratic primary to Ned Lamont, a businessman, beause of his support for the Iraq War and George W. Bush's foreign policy. The Republican candidate, Alan Schlesinger, was an unknown and hurt politically because of a controversial gambling addiction. In the polls, he registered in the single digits; Lieberman, as a result, won the support of many Republicans impressed by his moderate support for the war. Lieberman also lost the primary because, prior to it, he announced he would start collecting petitions in the event of him losing. Many Democrats saw him as a traitor who was more considered about his own personal future than the will of the party. In the end, Lieberman won with:
Lieberman (Independent): 50%
Lamont (Democrat): 40%
Schlesinger (Republican): 10%

He lost the Democratic primary and ran as an Independent. I don't know about horrible but he won for many years because of Democratic support. It is customary and considered somewhat ethical- to drop out of the race when you lose the Primary running as one party or another. Or, it would be right to run in the Primary as an Independent. He didn't do either, so he got Democrats to vote for him as well as Independents. The Republican running got few votes so there is some thought(and it seems likely) that they backed Lieberman rather than their Republican candidate, knowing they couldn't win a strongly Democratic state but with they could count on Lieberman for war support.

Nothing horrible happened, he won and he did not run as a libertarian, he ran as an independent because he lost in the primary election as a Democrat. In the primaries you have to vote by party affiliation but since he believed (correctly) that the majority of the people in his state of Connecticut approved of him and wanted him to continue as their Senator, he decided to run in the General election as an Independent, and he won.

Leiberman is a Republican disguised as a Democrat. The people voting in the primary election knew this and he was voted out. He ran in the General Election as an Independent and the Republicans helped get him elected.

He ran as an independent.

My understanding was that he lost the democratic nomination because of his support of the war. In the general election he had enough support from non-registered democrats to win. That's why he was re-elected but not as a democrat.

You are right in that NOBODY knows what party Lieb belongs to. :-) Lieb PRETENDED to be a Democrat in the primary and got his a__ kicked by a proud Democrat, Ned Lamont, who I was priviliged to meet and work for. Maybe Lieb is a Dumbyacrat???
